Announcing J BRAND and Proenza Schouler exclusive denim collaboration

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

We’re excited about this…

Proenza Schouler debuted a Fall 2010 exclusive denim collaboration with J Brand jeans at the Proenza Schouler Fall/Winter 2010 runway show on Wednesday, February 17th at 8:00PM in New York. This one season collaboration marks the first ever jean produced by Proenza Schouler.

“For fall 2010 we are exploring ideas closer to home. Urban elements are important as is the idea of uniforms. Denim fits the bill as the most ubiquitous item in most people’s wardrobe. Proenza Schouler will for the first time, explore this classic element, never-the-less infusing it with the Proenza Schouler DNA,”said Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler.

Keeping in line with the classic J Brand fit and aesthetic, and the Proenza Schouler modern silhouette, the collaboration is highlighted by a denim and black graphic-printed, exaggerated high-rise skinny jean featured on the runway. The jean is made of 11-ounce Japanese stretch denim. Once the jean is printed, it is hand painted all over to accentuate texture and dimension.

“We are extremely excited to work with Lazaro and Jack. They have great vision, a point of view, are incredibly talented and fun to work with,” said Jeff Rudes, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of J Brand.

“Everyone we know wears J Brand. It was an easy choice,” continued Hernandez and McCollough.

The jean collection will be available in exclusive specialty stores mid-July.

Q&A
Q: What is your favorite city to be inspired by fashion and the way people dress?
A: Everywhere! I’m inspired by humanity.

Q: You’ve been quoted on your love of J Brand. Which styles are your favorite?
A: All of the J Brand jeans are classic to me but, if I have to choose one or two, I’d say the 910 Skinny or 912 Pencil in Ink and the Love Story.

Jen Rade's Favorite Jeans

My favorite new style is the denim legging – I absolutely love. They are so soft, lightweight and cozy. And with over-the-knee or knee-high flat boots…perfection! The color is great too.

Leggings

Q: What are five items every girl needs in her wardrobe?
A: Great jeans, a classic cocktail dress that fits great, black heels, a good coat, and a cashmere sweater.

Q: Why do you keep coming back to J Brand?
A: I keep coming back, or actually never leave J Brand, for many reasons…first and foremost, the fit is the absolute best. I also think the denim used is amazing, the perfect amount of stretch. I love the colors and washes and the quality is great. I still have my very first pair from almost five years ago and even though they’ve been washed a zillion times, and I have probably 15 other pairs of J Brand, I still love that first pair.

J Brand’s can be dressed up or down for day or night, they go with absolutely everything, and they are a perfect combination of form and function as they both look and feel great! Style AND comfort! What else can I say!

Behind the Scenes of the J Brand Spring / Summer 2010 Ad Campaign

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Shot in Brooklyn, all the creative elements came together at our Spring / Summer 2010 fashion shoot. J Brand’s Art Director, Laura Pizzarelli, offers some insight into the inspiration behind the campaign.

Q: What was your vision for the Spring / Summer 2010 photo shoot?
A: We wanted to be bold and reveal a person’s inner spirit, power and sexuality set in a minimal environment.  No bells and whistles, just expression and feeling.

Q: Provide three words that you feel best describe the inspiration behind the SS ’10 collection?
A: sexy, minimal, indulgent comfort (I know that’s four but the last two have to go together!)

Q: How was the inspiration of the product lines depicted during the shoot?
A: Jessica and Kelly are so powerful and sexy completely alone in a room and that’s what we were going for.  The woman/man and the jeans speak for themselves. No big set, no skin, no props … well one, but really, who couldn’t use a great red chair?!

SS10

Q: What models were used for the shoot and why were they cast specifically?
A: Jessica Miller and Kelly Rippy. Completely authentic, really nice people, sexy as hell, raw human spirit.

Q: How was it to work with Terry Richardson and what did he bring to the shoot (aside from anticipated genius)?
A: It was like working with a lifelong friend I had never met before … Terry is super  cool and casual, he has great taste in music, makes everyone comfortable and he’s a genius as anticipated. He took an empty space and a camera and with the models created “bam!”

SS10

Q: Is this the first time working with Terry for J Brand? What were his impressions with the product and shooting it?
A: Yes, first time.  Hopefully not the last.  When I look at the end result, I’d like to think he was into it as much as we were.

Q: How did his personality come out in the shoot?
A: First of all there was a great vibe. Low key and intense, just like Terry.  Second, he just has a unique, energetic presence, kind of unexpected. I think how that translated is obvious.

Q: How did your creativity with styling and his unique eye behind the lens come together and collaborate?
A: We knew Terry’s style and we wanted whatever he was bringing.  We’re not looking through the lens so we just made sure he had all the tools to work with from the model, to the jeans, accessories, atmosphere and couches.  He brought them all together in the lens and made it into art.

Q: What was your favorite: shot/post/product?
A: That’s a tough one, I really like them all.  But for the woman, Jessica standing in that corner of the wall in the legging speaks directly to the vision we had for the shoot.  For the men’s it’s how the two shots we chose work together, Kelly goes from a plaid shirt to a jacket and tie and the J Brand vibe remains seamless.

SS10

Q: Any unique anecdotes or stories from the set?
A: My favorite time of that day was walking around outside shooting Kelly with no real plan in mind.  The sun setting on the streets of Brooklyn in just the right place, that green wall just screaming to be shot. Great fun, good people.
